Loco Pilot Salary 2026: Salary In Hand Per Month, Basic Pay and Allowances

Loco pilot salary in 2026 starts at a basic pay of ₹19,900 a month for an Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP). The in-hand figure is a different story. Loco pilots are paid partly by the kilometre, and that single fact changes the maths more than most salary guides admit.

With 11,127 ALP vacancies announced under CEN 01/2026 and the first computer-based test (CBT-1) scheduled for 3 to 5 November 2026, many candidates want to know what the job actually pays. Here’s how the salary is built.

Why the “₹25,000–35,000 In Hand” Figure Is Out of Date

Search for ALP salary and almost every result quotes ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 in hand. Some pages even show payslips built on old grade-pay figures, from before DA crossed 50%.

The numbers have moved on since then. At today’s 60% DA, basic pay plus DA alone comes to ₹31,840 for a new ALP. Add HRA and transport allowance in a metro posting and the gross reaches about ₹39,970, before a single kilometre of running allowance is counted.

So treat the popular ₹25,000–35,000 range as a floor at best, not a realistic estimate.

The Loco Pilot Promotion Ladder and Pay Levels

Nobody joins as a Loco Pilot. You join as an ALP, work beside a Loco Pilot in the cab, and move up through internal selections and years of service.

Look at the last three rows. Goods, passenger, and mail drivers all start on the same basic pay. What separates them is the kilometreage rate and seniority, which is why promotion from goods to mail service still means a real pay rise.

A Railway Board order dated 9 April 2026 on seniority lists also notes that some senior passenger and goods drivers sit in Level 7 (₹44,900 entry), mostly through long service. After Mail/Express, the ladder continues to Loco Inspector and supervisory roles.

Kilometreage Allowance: The Part That Changes Everything

Most government employees are paid for their time. Running staff are also paid for distance. This payment, called Kilometreage Allowance (KMA), is what separates a loco pilot’s payslip from that of any desk-based railway employee.

KMA Rates After the March 2026 Revision

On 20 March 2026, the Railway Board revised KMA and the related allowance (ALK), effective retrospectively from 1 January 2024. The trigger was DA crossing 50%.

Because the order came in March 2026 but applies from January 2024, running staff became entitled to roughly 27 months of arrears. Many drivers received a sizeable one-time payment this year as a result.

What ALK Covers

Allowance in lieu of Kilometreage (ALK) is paid on days when running staff do duty without running a train, such as training, route learning, or certain spare duties. It is calculated per 160 km equivalent, so it keeps income flowing even when the loco isn’t moving.

The Unions Say the Rates Are Still Too Low

Not everyone welcomed the revision. The All India Loco Running Staff Association argues that KMA was originally tied to 30% of the minimum pay of Level 6, and that no running staff member is at that minimum any more. By its calculation, the fair rate for a Passenger Loco Pilot would be about ₹839 per 100 km, against the ₹600 actually granted.

This dispute is unresolved and will probably reach the 8th Pay Commission.

Other Allowances on a Loco Pilot’s Payslip

Dearness Allowance: 60% of basic pay since January 2026. Inflation data points to 63% from July 2026. Cabinet approval usually comes in September or October, with arrears paid from July.

House Rent Allowance: 30%, 20%, or 10% of basic pay depending on the city class. It is not paid to staff living in railway quarters. Many crew-lobby towns have railway colonies, so plenty of loco pilots pay a low licence fee instead of drawing HRA.

Transport Allowance: An ALP at Level 2 gets ₹1,350 plus DA in higher-rate cities. Levels 3 to 8 get ₹3,600 plus DA.

The 30% pay element: Railway running allowance rules treat part of basic pay as a “pay element”. This is used to calculate DA and HRA for running staff, and some benefits, so real payslips usually show slightly more than a simple calculation would. Which percentage applies for retirement and provident fund purposes depends on the rule and your pension scheme, so check with your establishment section.

This illustration assumes a metro posting, private accommodation, 60% DA, and about 4,500 km of running in a month. Real mileage depends on the roster, so a light month pays less and a heavy month pays more.

Income tax, insurance, and other deductions reduce these amounts further, depending on the tax regime and individual situation. Even so, a new ALP who runs full rosters can take home well above the ₹35,000 figure repeated across the internet.

What Changes Next for Loco Pilot Pay

The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted on 3 November 2025 and is expected to report around May 2027. When its recommendations are implemented, basic pay will be multiplied by a new fitment factor and DA will reset to zero. KMA, ALK, and other railway-specific allowances will also be reviewed.

Until then, loco pilot pay stays on the 7th CPC structure. The next change most staff will see is the July 2026 DA revision.
