SBI PO salary in 2026 involves three numbers that candidates constantly mix up: ₹48,480, ₹56,480, and ₹21.97 lakh. The first is where the officer pay scale starts. The second is the basic pay most new Probationary Officers actually draw. The third is SBI’s estimate of total cost to company, which is very different from what reaches your bank account.
Once you separate these three, working out the in-hand salary is simple. This guide explains each one, lists the allowances, and gives a realistic monthly take-home figure.

| SBI PO Pay Overview | 2026 Figures |
| Grade on joining | Junior Management Grade Scale-I (JMGS-I) |
| Pay scale | ₹48,480 – ₹85,920 |
| Starting basic (with 4 advance increments) | ₹56,480 (widely accepted reading) |
| Approximate annual CTC (Mumbai) | ₹21.97 lakh |
| Dearness Allowance | 27.83% (August–October 2026) |
| Special Allowance | 26.5% of basic, plus DA on it |
| Probation period | 2 years |
| Service bond | ₹2 lakh for 3 years |
₹48,480, ₹56,480, and ₹21.97 Lakh Explained
₹48,480: Where the Scale Begins
The officer pay scale is written as ₹48,480 – 2,000/7 – 62,480 – 2,340/2 – 67,160 – 2,680/7 – 85,920. That means seven yearly increments of ₹2,000, then two of ₹2,340, then seven of ₹2,680. ₹48,480 is only the first step.
₹56,480: What a New PO Usually Draws
SBI gives new POs four advance increments on joining. At ₹2,000 each, that takes the starting basic to ₹56,480. Most coaching platforms and SBI officers read the notification this way.
A note of caution: a few sources read the 2026 notification’s wording as saying the starting basic is ₹48,480 including the four increments. That reading doesn’t match the published pay scale, but the notification’s wording does leave room for doubt. Your appointment letter will confirm the exact figure.
₹21.97 Lakh: Cost to Company, Not Salary
SBI raised its stated approximate CTC for a PO in Mumbai from ₹20.43 lakh to ₹21.97 lakh in the 2026 notification. This figure includes the bank’s NPS contribution, leased accommodation, medical benefits, performance incentives, and other benefits. It’s the bank’s total spend on you, not the money you take home.
Allowances on Top of Basic Pay
Dearness Allowance – DA is revised every quarter based on inflation. It rose from 25.70% to 27.83% from 1 August 2026. DA is paid on basic pay plus special allowance, so it is larger than it first looks.
Special Allowance – From 1 November 2022, Scale I officers receive 26.5% of basic pay as special allowance, with DA paid on top of it. For a new PO, that’s roughly ₹15,000 before the DA is added.
House Rent Allowance or Leased Accommodation – Officers who arrange their own housing get HRA as a percentage of basic pay, with the rate depending on the city. Many SBI officers instead choose bank-leased accommodation, where the bank pays rent directly up to a limit. With leased accommodation, your cash salary is lower, but so are your own housing costs.
Learning Allowance – Officers get ₹850 a month plus DA on that amount.
Other benefits – These include medical cover, Leave Fare Concession, performance-linked incentives, and concessional staff loans for housing and vehicles. The value of these doesn’t appear in your monthly salary, but it is part of the CTC figure.
Monthly Salary Breakdown for a New SBI PO
This estimate uses a starting basic of ₹56,480, DA of 27.83%, and HRA instead of leased accommodation.
| Component | Amount (₹) |
| Basic pay | 56,480 |
| Special Allowance @ 26.5% | 14,967 |
| DA @ 27.83% on (basic + special allowance) | 19,884 |
| HRA (~10% of basic, metro) | 5,648 |
| Learning Allowance + DA | 1,087 |
| Approximate gross | ~98,000 |
| Less: NPS and professional tax (approx.) | ~7,400 |
| Approximate in-hand, before income tax | ~90,000 |
Many websites quote a PO’s in-hand salary as ₹80,000–85,000. Those figures are usually based on older DA rates, or they subtract income tax too. Your actual take-home depends on the tax regime you choose, your deductions, and whether you take HRA or leased accommodation.
How Basic Pay Grows in Scale I
The four advance increments do two things: they raise your starting pay, and they shorten your time in the first stage of the scale.
| Years After Joining | Basic Pay (₹) |
| Joining | 56,480 |
| 1 year | 58,480 |
| 3 years | 62,480 |
| 5 years | 67,160 |
| 12 years | 85,920 (top of Scale I) |
In practice, few POs stay in Scale I for 12 years. Promotion to Middle Management Grade Scale-II, which starts at ₹64,820 basic, usually comes much earlier for officers who clear the internal promotion process. Each promotion also brings a higher special allowance: 28.3% of basic for Scales II and III.
Here’s a comparison that puts the PO salary in perspective. A new SBI PO starts on a basic pay only ₹8,000 below the maximum an SBI clerk reaches after about 17 years of service. On top of that, a PO’s special allowance is calculated on the higher officer basic.
Bond, Probation and Other Conditions
A few conditions in the notification directly affect your money:
- ₹2 lakh service bond: new POs must agree to serve SBI for at least three years. Leaving earlier means paying the bond amount.
- Two-year probation: confirmation as an officer depends on completing probation satisfactorily.
- All-India posting: POs can be posted anywhere in the country. Your HRA, city allowances, and living costs depend on where you’re sent.

As of late September, the mains result has not been announced. Candidates who clear the mains will go on to a psychometric test, group exercise, and interview. The SBI PO 2027 notification has not been released yet.
FAQs
Q1. What is the SBI PO in-hand salary in 2026?
About ₹90,000 a month before income tax for a new PO in a metro drawing HRA. Taking bank-leased accommodation instead reduces the cash salary.
Q2. Is SBI PO basic pay ₹48,480 or ₹56,480?
The scale starts at ₹48,480. With four advance increments of ₹2,000 each, new POs are generally understood to start at ₹56,480. Your appointment letter confirms the figure.
Q3. What does the ₹21.97 lakh CTC include?
Salary, DA, allowances, the bank’s pension contribution, leased accommodation, medical benefits, and incentives. It’s SBI’s total cost for an officer, not annual take-home pay.
Q4. Can an SBI PO leave before three years?
Yes, but they must pay the ₹2 lakh service bond. The bond covers the first three years from the date of joining.
Q5. How long does it take an SBI PO to reach the top of Scale I?
About 12 years at normal increments. Most officers are promoted to Scale II well before that.
